More newby questions.. 1 Year, 2 Months ago
Hi Guys,

I am slowly getting the hang of things, but wondered if some of you may be able to answer the following:

- Is there a way of creating custom forms, so that I loose some of the information on the bottom, such as 'Global' and those other things?

- I there a way of making reports more 'custom'. For example, I wish to maybe add a footer to printout reports, as well as logos/images on the top.. Also, how can I change things such as Header sizes, fonts, and general text sizes? I also tried right clicking the column headers, in attempt rename, but the rename didn't work!

- I have looked into using the Reporter. When it comes to creating a window/book page how do I link my saved report into this? Also, is there a way to put this into a book page, without going via the Library route? Basically, the reports I want to create are always of the same type, so I want to press Create Report, rather than use filters at a Front End.

- How does exporting and importing reports work? Can this be used to tackle things like views, and making things a little tidier?

- Lastly, when entering information. Is it possible to have Drop Down boxes, with pre-entered information in it? Such as 2 options, of which one you have to pick, rather than typing your own information.

- Is it possible to use information entered in say 'Page 1' of a Book to use as report titles?

- Whats the best way to use pre-set information in one set of tables to add certain columns of information to a second table? For example, Columns 1 and 2 from Table 1 to Table 2, and columns 3 - 8 from Table 2 to Table 3.

- How can you (and is it possible to) open a Book from a Book. I tried a few different methods in terms of making links, but none of them worked.

- Is it possible to create Users, who can have limited information to certain books and/or pages of books/forms etc?

Cheers
Neil

Lots of questions! I'll try to answer.

Many of these things are included in the Accounting sample application so you might want to download it and have a look.

- Is there a way of creating custom forms, so that I loose some of the information on the bottom, such as 'Global' and those other things?

You can always use a bare Controller and do whatever you want. If you want some of the features of AccessControl but not others, then you can make your own version, either starting from scratch, or by copying AccessControl to your own library with a different name, and then modifying it. The problem with this is that when there is a new version of stdlib, your copy won't get updated.

Reports can be any way you want. AfterPage can be used for footers. ImageFormat can be used for logos. You can override font on most formats. Column headings normally come from the "Heading" member of Field_ definitions.

- I have looked into using the Reporter. When it comes to creating a window/book page how do I link my saved report into this? Also, is there a way to put this into a book page, without going via the Library route? Basically, the reports I want to create are always of the same type, so I want to press Create Report, rather than use filters at a Front End.

You can put a reporter report into the book with:

#("Params", #("ReporterFormat", "Reporter - my report" ))

where "my report" is the name you saved it as.

- How does exporting and importing reports work? Can this be used to tackle things like views, and making things a little tidier?

This is primarily for moving reports from one place to another.

- Lastly, when entering information. Is it possible to have Drop Down boxes, with pre-entered information in it? Such as 2 options, of which one you have to pick, rather than typing your own information.

That sounds like ChooseListControl

- Is it possible to use information entered in say 'Page 1' of a Book to use as report titles?

Yes, for example, in the accounting application you enter a company name in the setup options and then that name is printed on the top of reports.

- Whats the best way to use pre-set information in one set of tables to add certain columns of information to a second table? For example, Columns 1 and 2 from Table 1 to Table 2, and columns 3 - 8 from Table 2 to Table 3.

You can join tables in queries. For example, if you have a transaction table with a part number column, you could join with an inventory table.

- How can you (and is it possible to) open a Book from a Book. I tried a few different methods in terms of making links, but none of them worked.

To open a book from code, it's just BookControl("mybook" )

- Is it possible to create Users, who can have limited information to certain books and/or pages of books/forms etc?

Yes, look at the Accounting sample application.
